Georgia, Apples, and You
Most of the people in Georgia would claim that their apples are the best. And the claim is well backed up.
If you’re driving through Georgia from late August up till December, your nose would immediately pick up the scent of apples, whether sour apples, just ripening, or those bursting with flavor, juice and meat.
The roadsides are abound with apple booths, every booth being managed directly by the grower. It’s quite inexpensive to buy directly from the growers, so if you get the urge to buy some apples; buy it plenty and buy it directly.
Georgia is the town to splurge when it comes to apples, especially during the later half of the year. The apples are freshly-picked and are bursting. Mind that you use a napkin when eating or you’d leave a mess in your hands. Nothing beats the taste of fresh apples, especially not grocery or store-brought ones.
A recent taste test also revealed that more consumers actually prefer the juicy apples of Georgia, compared to Washington State apples. I really don’t see the difference, but heck, why bother? The test was done, the apples are more preferred, so I guess they should taste better right?
With Georgia, you get introduced to different aromas, different scents. Apples picked at this time of the year vary accordingly, whether at the time of picking, the fruit’s current age, and the type of tree. The variety matters. There’s Red and Golden Delicious, Gala, Winesap, Mutsu and Granny Smith. I personally like the Fuji variety, it’s the ultimate in crispiness and in sweetness. Good for cooking or for eating.
Apples are also high in dietary fiber, and in natural sugars. They have no fat, and no cholesterol. Apples store well and can be used for preserves, baked goodies and stews. It goes without saying they make good snacks too!
